Within the fortress
Modem Ivano-Frankivsk — Stanyslaviv in the past—was founded as a fortress city according to the plan of the «ideal city», which was known from the Renaissance period. However, there were only three cities in Ukraine like that because they were supposed to be built from «scratch» on flat ground or just on an empty place. The architects of Stanyslaviv were Francois Corassini and his successor — Carlo Benoe. They were the authors of the medieval «cities-stars» with a star as a symbol which had been put into the foundation of all “ideal cities”. Stanyslaviv was surrounded by strong walls; the ethnic groups were living within their territories, there were temples and a Town Hall in the center of the market square. I wondered just how large that area of that super city was. Let us j go for a walk in the limits of fortress to find out.
We’ll make acquaintance not only with Renaissance, but with the monuments and memorials of all periods of development of Ivano-Frankivsk.

On the central street and central square
Vichovyi Square (Public Gathering Square) and Nezalezhnosti (Independence) Street form the center of Ivano-Frankivsk. They are the favorite pedestrian area of the city. It was created relatively recently — in 1988, and popularly is referred to as I simply «stometrivka» («100 meter long street»). However, Nezalezhnosti Street is extended beyond the «stometrivka” area and still stretches for a few kilometers in the direction of town of Tysmenytsia. So let us go for a walk around the center of Ivano-Frankivsk as there are many interesting facts about this area.
The length of the route is about four kilometers.

Around the railway station and to the center
Everyone is used to, and moreover, it has become a norm, that, in general, the city guides begin exploring the city from the center — its historical heart. And this is quite logical thinking. But one still needs to get to that very heart. According to statistics, majority of tourists arrive to Ivano-Frankivsk by train (especially young people). And everybody is in a hurry to see the Town Hall, cen-tral area and churches, paying no attention to the unknown buildings on their way. And afterwards they say: ‘Cool city, but a small one. We have seen everything in three hours’.
We decided to prove that with our guide the way from the railway station to the Town Hall will be more time consuming, but more perceptional. So, here we start from the platform of Ivano-Frankivsk railway station.
Duration: 2,5 hours (2,5 km);
Price: 35 Euro
Moving away from the downtown
Sichovykh Striltsiv Street goes parallel to the “stometrivka” and merges with it later. It serves as kind of particular connection, because here branch away the streets that lead to residential districts of the city and beyond its limits. The street itself is quite extraordinary, as well as Konovaltsia, Chornovola, Sakharova and Mateika streets. A small number of sightseeings on these streets is alarming on the one hand, but it is interesting on the other. So, let us start. We begin from the intersection of Sichovykh Striltsiv, Mazepy and Orlyka Streets.
The nature of this tour itinerary is primarily informative and is designed for tourists who have visited our city before but want to explore it in more detail.
Duration: 3 hours (3,5 km);
Price: 40 Euro
To the Zvirynetska grove
The modern Shevchenka Street is one of the oldest streets of Ivano-Frankivsk. It is known since the city has been founded in the 17th century. The traveler Ulrich von Werdum mentions that it led to the Zvirynetska grove where the Potocki family invited guests and hunted. Since then a lot has changed, the grove was transformed into a field, then — into a park, the street changed its name several times (the most famous names — Lypova and Shevchenka since 1961). There are 44 monuments on the street and one can spend up to three hours on a full pedestrian excursion.
This is a great offer for those wishing to take a delight in visiting Ivano-Frankivsk and go for this romantic tour itinerary that will drive you through the history of Stanyslaviv from its creation to the present times accompanied by murmur of centennial lindens. Here, in addition to visual perception, one needs to switch on imagination and consequently submerge into an incredible meeting with the past.
Duration: 3 hours (4,5 km);
Price: 40 Euro
To the Pasichna district
The building on the corner of Novgorodsta and Halytska streets fit is easy to notice because of the dissonant advertising on its facade) announces the ending of the center of the city and tie beginning of residential districts of the city with traditional Soviet buildings, houses-boxes, and finally private houses, built according to the principle “to make a house bigger than the neighbor’s”. However, after financial calculations, the question arises: «Did I really need to erect such a tower?» But this is not a matter of discussion now.
Then, the logical question: is it worth going for a walk in this direction? The answer is yes, and one should go for it, because during this tour it is possible to trace the expansion of Ivano-Frankivsk, make acquaintance with interesting sacred sights of Austrian period, to visit the place of sorrow and tragedy of Ukrainian people, the Demianiv Laz, and to discover something that is hidden from the other tourists.
