Modem Ivano-Frankivsk — Stanyslaviv in the past—was founded as a fortress city according to the plan of the «ideal city», which was known from the Renaissance period. However, there were only three cities in Ukraine like that because they were supposed to be built from «scratch» on flat ground or just on an empty place. The architects of Stanyslaviv were Francois Corassini and his successor — Carlo Benoe. They were the authors of the medieval «cities-stars» with a star as a symbol which had been put into the foundation of all “ideal cities”. Stanyslaviv was surrounded by strong walls; the ethnic groups were living within their territories, there were temples and a Town Hall in the center of the market square. I wondered just how large that area of that super city was. Let us j go for a walk in the limits of fortress to find out.

On the central street and central square

Vichovyi Square (Public Gathering Square) and Nezalezhnosti (Independence) Street form the center of Ivano-Frankivsk. They are the favorite pedestrian area of the city. It was created relatively recently — in 1988, and popularly is referred to as I simply «stometrivka» («100 meter long street»). However, Nezalezhnosti Street is extended beyond the «stometrivka” area and still stretches for a few kilometers in the direction of town of Tysmenytsia. So let us go for a walk around the center of Ivano-Frankivsk as there are many interesting facts about this area.

Around the railway station and to the center

Everyone is used to, and moreover, it has become a norm, that, in general, the city guides begin exploring the city from the center — its historical heart. And this is quite logical thinking. But one still needs to get to that very heart. According to statistics, majority of tourists arrive to Ivano-Frankivsk by train (especially young people). And everybody is in a hurry to see the Town Hall, cen-tral area and churches, paying no attention to the unknown buildings on their way. And afterwards they say: ‘Cool city, but a small one. We have seen everything in three hours’.
